FAQ
Where are your clothes made?
All of our clothes are made responsibly in Austin, Texas.
What is dead stock fabric?
Our fabric is sourced from brands, mills and designers' surplus goods. This surplus is often from fashion brands overestimating their needs and sales. These overages would otherwise be destined for the landfill.
Why should I shop with Friendly State?
The fashion industry is a significant contributor to pollution globally. According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the fashion industry is responsible for approximately 10% of global carbon emissions, and is the second largest consumer of the world's water supply.
Here are some examples of the ways in which the fashion industry contributes to pollution:
-
Water pollution: The dyeing and finishing of textiles requires large amounts of water, and the wastewater generated by this process can contain harmful chemicals and pollutants that can contaminate waterways.
-
Air pollution: The production of synthetic fabrics, as well as the transportation of clothing and textiles, contributes to air pollution.
-
Land pollution: The disposal of clothing and textiles in landfills can release methane, a potent greenhouse gas, as well as other harmful chemicals into the environment.
-
Microplastic pollution: Synthetic fabrics shed tiny plastic fibers when they are washed, which can end up in rivers and oceans and harm marine life.
-
Chemical pollution: The use of toxic chemicals in textile production, such as dyes, bleaches, and finishing agents, can pose a risk to human health and the environment.
It's important to note that the fashion industry's impact on pollution is not limited to these examples, and there are many other ways in which the industry can have negative environmental impacts. However, there are also many efforts being made by individuals and companies within the fashion industry such as Friendly State to reduce its pollution footprint, such as investing in sustainable materials (like dead stock fabric), improving supply chain transparency (sourcing and manufacturing locally), and promoting circular fashion practices.
